This event is organised by The Friends of The Sands, and tickets are available direct from Jan Coxon, the Treasurer, 01697371939 firstname.lastname@example.org.
The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Ludovic Morlot - who is French but has been working in the USA with various orchestras.
To be performed:
Milhaud - The Boeuf sur le Toit:
A piece written just after the First World War ad setting the mood for the care-free 1920s, full of Brazilian tunes and dominated by a recurring theme. A sparking enjoyable start to a concert.
Ravel - Piano Concerto in G major
Composed a decade later. The outer movements are much influenced by jazz which Ravel had come across in a recent concert tour of the USA with a serene slow movement as contrast.
Prokofiev Symphony No 5.
This was composed in the USSR in 1944 when the Second World War was being won, Prokofiev said that it was 'a hymn to free and happy man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit'.
It soon became popular in the West, and is certainly exciting to listen to, with many contrasting moods, but overall full of exuberance and joy.
